Samsung Gear S2 is Samsung’s circular smartwatch

It’s been a long time coming, but the Samsung Gear S2 has finally been announced… sort of. At the company’s Unpacked event on Thursday, Samsung ended its presentation by teasing its circular smartwatch, saying it’s just “around” the corner. Get it? We should know more at IFA in Berlin, which kicks off at the beginning of September.

While we didn’t get any specs—or any details really—Samsung did briefly show off the hardware and software, and it looks pretty great. It’s clear this thing isn’t running Android Wear—that layout is more than reminiscent of Apple watchOS—though that might not be too big of a deal if Samsung can get the experience right. Based on the brief glimpse we saw, the device looks like it’ll be the next smartwatch to get.
According to previous rumors, Samsung’s new round wearable will sport a circular 1.56-inch display with a resolution of 360 x 360, an Exynos 3472 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 768MB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.1 and an array of sensors for activity tracking. Additionally, it might also come equipped with a 250mAh battery, which should last users a full work day.
But it isn’t really about the specs. What makes the Gear S2 attractive is its circular design, which we’ve heard uses a bezel ring as a means of navigation—think of it as manually focusing a camera. We should know more about the Gear S2 soon, but in the meantime, check out all of our Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus coverage.
